United States Geological Survey

As an unbiased, multi-disciplinary science organization that focuses on biology, geography, geology, geospatial information, and water, the USGS collects, analyzes, and provides scientific understanding about the landscape, our natural resources, and the natural hazards that threaten us.

Oregon Paleo Lands Institute
The Oregon Paleo Lands Institute will help you discover Oregon’s past and explore its present. Our mission is to protect, promote, and educate about Oregon’s ancient and living landscapes, while supporting the rural communities of the John Day Basin. We provide trips, classes, and adventures where you can collect fossils, fine-tune your skills in photography, or volunteer to assist paleontologists in their research.

Oregon Department of Geology & Mineral Industries
Created in 1937 as an independent state agency, DOGAMI has evolved from its early focus on mining to become Oregon’s major source of information to help Oregonians understand and prepare for the vast array of natural hazards that accompany the state’s spectacular geology. A primary function of the agency is mapping varied geology and natural hazards, including earthquakes, tsunamis, landslides and coastal erosion.

Hells Canyon National Recreation Area
The Hells Canyon National Recreation Area hugs the borders of northeastern Oregon and western Idaho, showcasing 652,488 acres of beauty and adventure. Idaho Geological Survey
The Idaho Geological Survey is a public service and research agency at the University of Idaho. The Survey collects, interprets, and disseminates geologic and mineral data for the state of Idaho. The geologic mapping program is the primary applied research function of the agency. Programs include geologic hazards, hydrology, mining, mine safety training, abandoned and inactive mines inventory, and earth science education.

Wallowa-Whitman National Forest
The Wallowa-Whitman National Forest includes 2.3 million acres ranging in elevation from 875 feet in Hells Canyon, to 9845 feet in the Eagle Cap Wilderness. The forests are managed as sustainable ecosystems providing clean water, wildlife habitat and valuable forest products. Comprised of four Ranger Districts and the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area, this is the setting for a variety of year-round recreation.
